How to keep a window always on top in Windows 11 and 10
Windows doesn't have an "always on top" button. Depending on what you want to keep visible, there are three good ways to do it.
1. PowerToys Always On Top (free, from Microsoft)
Install PowerToys from the Microsoft Store, then press Win + Ctrl + T on any window: it stays above the others, with a colored border. Press the shortcut again to unpin it.
Good for: keeping a full-size window visible. Limits: the window keeps its size and frame; it doesn't shrink into a corner and can't be cropped.
2. The app's own option
- VLC: Video menu > Always on top.
- Media Player (Windows 11): the mini player button.
- Chrome, Edge, Firefox: Picture-in-Picture for videos (right-click the video, or the PiP icon).
Good for: a video in one of these apps. Limits: only works where the app offers it, and browser PiP only shows the video, not the chat or the page.
3. FloatPin: any app, small, in a corner
FloatPin works with every app: bring it to the front and press Ctrl + Alt + M. It becomes small, borderless and always on top. You can crop it to keep only the video, the chat or the score, move it with a handle and resize it from any corner.
Good for: a match, a Discord call, a Twitch chat, docs while you code, in a corner while you work. Limits: cropping a DRM-protected video (Netflix, Disney+) shows black; there's no need to crop those since their player already fills the window.
